About Me August 27, 2009

My name is Emily Kerley and I am a senior at Appalachian State University.  I love being at ASU and I decided to come here my senior year in high school after just one visit to the campus.  I have always wanted to be a teacher and I used to play school when I was little.  I decided to follow my heart and pursue a degree in elementary education and I am excited to graduate in May with my degree.  I am looking forward to having my own classroom where I hope to make learning fun and meaningful for all students.

What I like…

I enjoy spending time with my family and my dog named Lucy.  I am an only child and my family lives in Taylorsville, NC.  I like to do a lot of different things with my family.  A lot of times we will go out together to eat, to shop, or to even see a movie.  I also like spending time with them at home ,especially on Sunday afternoons where we can just relax and enjoy spending time together as a family.  We also go on a lot of vacations together every summer.  We enjoy just getting away for a while and spending quality time together.  I have found over the years that the relationship between family is one of the most precious things in the world and I would not give up the one that I have with mine for anything.

I love spending time with my friends because they can always make me laugh and smile!  I try to spend as much time with them as I can.  A lot of times I will go to see a movie, go bowling, or go out to eat just to catch up and spend some time with them.  I have realized that friendship is one of the most important things in life and they are the people who will be there for you no matter what.  I have many friends but there are a few close ones that mean the world to me and that I can go to for anything.  I find comfort in knowing that these few close friends know so much about me and they still love me for who I am.

I love most types of animals, especially dogs.  My family got my dog, Lucy, from an animal shelter about five years ago and she is a big part of my family.  I like taking her for walks in the park and just spending time playing with her outside.  She loves to play fetch and she will go get her ball whenever she is ready to play.  She is very hyper and she loves to just run around the back yard.  She also spends a lot of time inside our house and she always likes to cuddle up next to me whenever she can.  I love how she always greets me at the door or at my car whenever I arrive  home.  I believe it’s true when they say that a dog is man’s best friend.

I like to read a lot.  I like all kinds of books, especially the Harry Potter series and Nicholas Spark’s books.  I actually read around twelve novels this summer.  I love to read outside where I can feel the sunshine and hear the birds chirping.  I also like to read sitting on my front porch swing.  There is something about this that makes me forget all of my worries and just become engaged in the book that I am reading.  I am currently trying to take a little time each day so that I can read a book that I am interested in.  The thing that I love most about reading is that I am able to pretend that I am actually one of the characters in the book and that opens up a whole new part of my imagination.

What I dislike…

I do not like feeling that I do not have enough time to do the things that I enjoy.  Sometimes I become so caught up in other things that I do not take enough time for myself and the things that I enjoy.  It is so easy for me to become caught up in my school work so that I don’t make any time for going to the gym, reading a good book, or catching up with a friend on the phone.  I am trying to work in a little time each day where I can put all other work aside and do something that I enjoy.

I dislike being unorganized.  I feel that I am a very organized person and I can work better if all of my things are organized and in the place that I put them.  I also don’t like when my teachers are unorganized because I feel that this is very important in being a teacher.  I feel that sometimes I can be a little too concerned about being organized because if I feel that some of my things are unorganized then I can become very frustrated.  I am trying to work on finding a good balance that I can live with.

There are certain types of animals that I do not like.  This includes snakes and spiders.  I think that I have actually only seen one snake in real life but I can still remember how scared I was and how I think that was the fastest I have ever ran in my life.  I also can not stand to see snakes on T.V. because I remember I had a nightmare after watching a show where there was a snake.  I do not like spiders, even though they can be very small, because I am always scared that they are going to crawl on me.  Luckily I don’t run every time I see a spider, as i do when I see a snake, but they still scare me.

There are certain types of food that I do not like.  I do not like any type of seafood, cucumbers, or raisins.  I also do not like ketchup, which a lot of people think is strange.  Whenever I get a salad to eat I always pick out the cucumbers.  I also always take the raisins out of trail mix.  Normally I am not picky about food but when it comes to these things I tend to stay away.

What I look like…

I am around 5′ 2” in height.  Sometimes being this short bothers me because I have trouble reaching things in high places.  I also find myself being the center of a joke because of my height.  I have long, auburn hair that reaches the middle of my back.  I have always wanted to have real long hair so I’m letting it grow out.  My eyes are blue like the ocean but also gray like the sky on a cloudy day.  Sometimes I think it depends on what kind of mood I am in or what color clothing I am wearing that determines my eye color from day-to-day.  My skin has an olive tone that the summer sun has recently turned dark brown.  I have freckles that cover my nose and my arms.  Some people say that these are sun kisses!

How I Act…

Whenever I think about how to describe me, I find it hard because I feel that I have many different parts to my personality.  Since I need to give some insight as to how I act, I will try to describe the four character traits that best describe me.

I am caring.  I have been described as being caring by my family, friends, and even people who don’t even know me that well.  I have found that often times I care more about other people than I do myself.  I care about how other people feel and how my actions might affect them.  I care about what my friends and family are doing and how they feel, whether they are happy or sad.  I will try any way that I can to help someone if they need it.

I am also very patient.  Some of my friends say this is what they like most about me.  I try and always take time to listen to others, no matter how long it may take.  I have also found that I am very patient when working with children.  I will try and try until a child finally understands.  I think that this is one of the most important qualities to possess as a teacher.

I am friendly.  One of my favorite things is to meet new people and make new friends.  I am always very open when meeting new people and I try and find the best in everyone.  I don’t think anyone can ever have too many friends so I try and make as many as possible.  I also think it is important that different friends have different qualities that are unique about them because you can learn so much more that way.

I am cheerful.  When everyone sees me I always have a smile on my face.  I think that a smile is a small way to make the world a better place.  I try and always have a positive outlook on life and therefore I am usually cheerful.  I hope that when others see me being cheerful I can put a smile on their face or make them have a better day.

What You Should Know About Me…

I think of myself as a young girl who trys to live life to the fullest!  I feel that I have my whole life ahead of me and I am ready for whatever is to come.  I try to find something that is special about each and every day!  I always like to share my love of life with others and hopefully I have made a difference in someone’s life.  You will always see a smile on my face and hopefully I can put one on yours!

As I mentioned earlier, family and friends are very important to me.  They are the people who have shaped me into the person that I am today.  They support me and they are always there no matter what.  I consider myself to be very blessed because I have such loving friends and family!

I love to experience new things, whether it is something big or small.  I like going to a new restaurant or a place that I have never been for.  I love meeting new people!  I feel that if I leave myself open to experience new things then I am leaving myself open to learn!

I have always wanted to be a teacher.  When I was a young child I would play school with my dolls.  I would make them sit in chairs and I would write on my little chalkboard.  In my young elementary school age I would take old textbooks that my teachers had given out and use those to teach my dolls.  I really enjoyed doing this and I knew from then on that this was something that I enjoyed.  I continued to find joy in working with children and my first job was working in a daycare.  I loved playing with the kids and helping them with their homework after school.  In a sense I felt that I was teaching them and then I knew for sure that I wanted to be a teacher.  During my senior year of high school I was in the Teaching Cadets program and I had an internship in a kindergarten classroom.  I absolutely loved it.  I loved working with kids this age because they are excited to be at school and they have such big imaginations.  I also loved seeing how much these children progressed from the beginning of the year to the end.  At this point I decided to apply to Appalachian State University and major in elementary education.  I have never regretted this decision and as I am finishing my last year here at ASU I know this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

I hope with Block 2, the things you enjoy will not get lost! It is always good to take a breather and do something you love to get your mind away from the madness for a few hours!!

I agree with you completely that family is the most precious thing in the world. I am a lot like you because I am very close to my family as well. We have the same reading interests. I too love Nicholas Sparks’ books. Because I have known you so long, I firmly believe that you are definitely caring, patient, friendly, and cheerful. In fact, you are one of the most caring individuals I know. I also loved to play school when I was younger but I would play with imaginary people instead of with my dolls!

    Emily,
I appreciate the time you took to include graphics, photos, and quotations. This really adds a dynamic element to your page. Thank you for elaborating on your descriptions. And remember, you only need a few minutes every day to do something for you…so, DO IT! ;-)

    Emily,

Thanks for the comment! I loved reading all about you! We do have lots of things in common. I especially liked the quotes you included throughout the page. “Oh the places you’ll go,” is a very good quote for educators. You never know where learning and the classroom will take you! How exciting is that?!

Congratulations on your engagement! The ring is beautiful! Enjoy being on “Cloud 9″ for the next couple of days! :)
